According
to the history of the present city, Karachi started its life
as a fishing settlement. Mai Kolachi who was a fisherwoman started her
living there and started her family. Later the village grew out of this
settlement and known as Kolachi-Jo-Goth. By the late 1700s Karachi started
gaining the importance because it started trading across the sea with Muscat
and the Persian Region. After that small fort had been constructed to
protect the area. The fort had two gateways, one was known as Khara darwaaza
facing the sea and the other gate was known as Meetha Darwaaza facing the
Layari River. In 1795, the control of the Kolachi- Jo-Goth passed on from
the khan of Klat to the Talpurs rulers of Sindh. The British, opened a small
company in south Asia and closed it down within a year. This area started
gaining importance because of the Indus River. Later the British India
