Zia ul HaqMuhammad Zia-ul-Haq was born on 12th August, 1924 at Jalandhar in India. He completed his early schooling from Simla and then went to St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He was commissioned in the British Indian Army in 1943 and was a part of World War II. After the creation of Pakistan, Zia decided to joint Pakistani Army as a major. He was trained in the USA from 1962 till1964 at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Kansas. In 1965 during Indo pakistan war, He was a tank commander. Zia-ul-Haq was the president and military ruler of Pakistan from July 1977 till August 1988. On 1 April 1976, Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto appointed Zia-ul-Haq as Chief of Army Staff, General Zia-ul-Haq came to rule over Pakistan after dismissal of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on July 5, 1977 and impose third martial law in Pakistan. He at first rule a year as martial law administrator and than took over the post of President of Pakistan in September 1978 although he had promised for elections but later change his decision due to the changing political conditions. During his regime he taken many decisions which includes immediate stabilization of Balochistan province, appointment of Rahimuddin Khan as martial law governor, Formation of Majlis-e-Shoora, In 1984 he held referendums and won the hearts of then 95% Peoples, gradual privatizations of the different sectors, Consolidation of Pakistan's nuclear programme, impose Islamic System like drinkng of alocoholic products was not a crime in1977 the drinking and selling of wine by Muslims was banned. Zia-ul-Haq was killed in a crash on 17th August 1988 with many of his generals and USA ambassador Arnold Lewis Raphel, they had left the small town of Punjab by aircraft. Soon after the take off the plane lost its contact with control tower and crashed. |
